When I was a little boy, whenever my mother would yell up the stairs that it was time to put the book down and go to bed, I'd yell back, "One more page!" Which became the name of my first web site: 1morepage.com.

Today with grown children of my own, I wake up each morning and this is what I see.
Lake Mahopac, in Putnam County, New York.

It's a lake I row on eight months a year.
I remember rowing really early in the morning a few years ago in June. I could still see the moon in the western part of the sky. And the sun just rising on the eastern horizon, a little like this picture.
All I could hear were the oars dipping into the still water and my exhalations each time I pulled.
There was a fog on the lake's surface, so it felt like I was rowing through a cloud.
And I remember thinking, "I don't want to stop rowing. I want to row and row and row my boat gently around the lake.  And then I want to do it again."
When my body told me it was time to put the boat back on land, I listened.
That morning I started writing my children's book, The Most Beautiful Snowflake. Which is funny, because I wasn't thinking about snow or snowflakes or winter at all when I was rowing. But the first words came to me. And I was off. And when my wife called me down for breakfast, I said, "One more page!" Hey, that's what microwaves are for.
